About the Community:

Denville Township, rich in the traditions of the native Lenape peoples, saw its first European presence in the mid-17th century with Dutch traders, followed by English colonizers who parceled the land among loyalists and Quaker proprietors. The area's fertile land and abundant mineral resources attracted various groups, including Quakers from Philadelphia, Dutch farmers, and English ironmasters. During the 18th century, Denville's economy was driven by iron production, with local forges playing a critical role in the American Revolution by supplying munitions. Prominent leaders like William Winds, a local farmer who rose to the rank of Colonel, significantly contributed to the war effort. In the 19th century, agriculture became the mainstay of Denville's economy, and the development of the Morris Canal and railroads connected the area to larger markets, spurring growth.

By the early 20th century, Denville was a small, rural hub within Rockaway Township, characterized by its dirt roads, elm trees, and historic homes. Dissatisfaction among local farmers with the taxes levied by Rockaway led to the formation of Denville Township in 1913, following a campaign of petitions and public debates. Over the next century, Denville evolved dramatically from a sleepy village into a chic and sophisticated community, all while retaining its small-town charm and historic roots.
